Hey, I've got some great news. Ashley and I found out last weekend that we're going to have a baby!

So here's a drawing I did to get some of that excited energy out so I'm not squirming in my seat all day at work. I used, solely, one of my custom brushes at a really small size to get this look. He almost looks as excited as I feel. Keep us in your prayers and thoughts and enjoy the drawing!

PS - I can almost hear a Stan Bush song playing in the background. Maybe something from the animated Transformers movie. Like this dude's singing "The Touch" as loud as he can and screaming "YEAH!" really high-pitched. I can hear the synthesizers now...

Here are a couple of sketches I thought I'd share. The black and white one is an early digital thing that I did with the Photoshop pencil tool several months ago.

The other is a recent page from my sketchbook where I wanted to try out this wood stain marker that I bought a little while back. I also threw on a little black with my brush pen, some extra color with Copics, and then I tested out some Sharpie oil-based white paint pens on top of that.

I know this isn't a caricature, but I just needed a good warm up. Don't know if I'll be able to post a caricature today, but if I can't you'll get an extra on another day! Hope you all like this. It's one of the shapeshifter aliens from The Fifth Element, which is one of my favorite movies. If you live under a rock and haven't ever seen it (it's been out for over a decade now), you should go watch it... right now! It's insanely fun sci-fi. Let me know what you think of the drawing!

So last night as I was putting up some movies at the movie store (my part-time job), I saw a cover box that almost made me burst out laughing on the spot. That's what spawned this quick, little drawing of Taylor Wolf-thing-SHARKBOY. Yeah, that's what made almost crack up! The big, bad Jacob from Twilight was once in that wretched turd by Robert Rodriguez. Don't get me wrong, I really like some of RR's movies, but the "Spy Kids" and the "... Sharkboy and Lavagirl" movies should never have been made. I was forced to watch part of Spy Kids 2 once (Was it with eyes peeled back, Clockwork Orange-style? I'll let you speculate... ) and I actually felt part of my brain turn to mush. It must have been a piece of my equilibrium. Ask my wife, I'm a horrible klutz.

Anyway, I'm also including some sketches. One is the grayscale stuff from the sharkboy (I don't feel like I can really call him anything else now) drawing and the others are early versions of the Marlon Wayans piece. I've got some paintings and stuff coming, but I don't know if I'll finish today so I thought you guys might like to see this while you wait. Enjoy.

By Request - Part 2

Here's the second request that I got from facebook. It's Dee Dee Ramone. Again, I'm pushing for speed, and I found something this morning that speed this up a lot. I don't know if this was in Photoshop CS3 or not, but in CS4 the Smudge tool has a "Fingerpaint" checkbox option. By no means do I have a full comprehension of everything this does, or why it works this way, but it is soooo much smoother and faster than the regular Smudge tool. It's a nerdy thing to get excited about, but I don't care!

In a bit of a weird mood today. Actually, I didn't know if I was even going to be able to get a caricature finished in time. Luckily, though, I did find a few minutes and put this together. It's Bryce Dallas Howard. For those who don't know, she's the replacement Victoria of the Twilight movies and the not-so-Gwen Stacy of Spider-man 3, among other things. Of course, she was also in Lady in the Water. I'm not really a fan, but I do like a couple of her movies. Let me know what you think (of the drawing, of the person, of hot air balloons, whatever).

I was asked to watch "Hot Tub Time Machine" this weekend for one of my jobs. Unfortunately, I did. Didn't really like the movie. There were a few funny scenes and lines, but for the most part it was just disgusting. Especially the bald dude. I wonder if the script really had that many "F" words in it or if he added in a couple thousand just for fun? Anyway, I think this is the first movie I've seen this bald dude in and he really kinda gave me the creeps. Maybe it was just the character, maybe it wasn't. Regardless, this is how I see him in my head, now.

Monday & the first sketch

I'm starting a new thing as of today. In an effort to expand my drawing ability, I'll be doing at least one caricature a day, Monday through Friday, for at least four weeks. If I get a good response and usable feedback, I may keep it up longer or at least keep up some sort of drawing a day. So please, leave comments to these posts so that I have an idea of how I'm doing!

If nothing else, let me know if it looks like the person I'm trying to draw. A big part of what I'm trying to do is achieving a "likeness."

And so, here's today's drawing. I thought, if I'm going to be drawing exaggerated versions of other people, I might as well start with myself. It's not too flattering, but that's okay. What do you think? Does it look like me?

New Story

Here are some samples from a new story I've been working on with Hudson Phillips. There are a few pages and some of the original character sketches. Hopefully, we'll find a publisher soon. It really is a fun story and I think Hudson wrote a great script for it.

FACTION & Small Press Idol

I recently met Erik Hendrix, a contestant on Small Press Idol, on Facebook and he seems like a really cool guy. His book in the contest is a comic called Faction. There's a #0 issue out and I encourage everyone reading this to go out and get a copy, whether it be the pdf or hard cop y. There are only five days left until the deadline for the competition and he needs to sell as many copies as possible to win. It's a fun story and there's a ton of content in this book.

I've been reading Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy. I'm just starting the third book, and so far I really like the series. This is the image that popped in my head during the first book when introduced to the Steel Inquisitors. I drew this digitally, in Corel Painter.

Here are the pages from All These Days Undone with the original "pencils" and "inks." I put quotations on these because I really did all of them digitally, though I still broke up the process as if I had used traditional media.

As a note, page 4 went from pencil straight to color. Page 5 is really sketchy because I planned on blurring it when I added color.

A lot has changed

It's been a while since I've posted and a lot has changed. The barbarian thing in WAY on the backburner. Actually, Josh and I finished the first issue of Low Level. Preview copies are being printed right now and we'll be pitching it at San Diego! Er, at least Josh will cuz I can't afford to go.

Anyway got other projects going on, too, such as some seriously cool stuff with writer Hudson Phillips. More on that later. In the meantime, here is the cover of the Low Level book.

Garage Sale

My wife and I had a garage sale last weekend. It was really too hot to have one, but we tried anyway. Didn't make much but I did get a sketch out of it. This is a little shot of our yard, tree, and across the street. The neighbors that live there are really cool.

Wretch-ed

I read The Wretch Vol. 3 by Phil Hester last weekend. Awesome book. It's a collection of short stories that all involve Hester's silent and weird superhero named the Wretch. I highly recommend this and all the other Wretch books. There aren't enough of these short story books out there. Anyway, I was so excited I started sketching. Enjoy.

Like so many others, I've been on a bit of a crime/noir kick lately. Also, it just so happened that I had a few "white ink" markers that I wanted to try out. Unfortunately, as you can see above, the "white" really just reactivated the black ink and turned gray. I actually kind of like the effect, though, even it it isn't what I was looking for. Anyway, this isn't the greatest drawing I've ever done, but I'm not ashamed of it either.
